Navigating through the various NDIS accommodation options can be challenging. In this article we aim to simplify some common terms, and to provide a better understanding on what options are available to you.
There are a number of different types of home and living supports that the NDIS can fund, including:
Below you can read more information on each one with links to the NDIS website fore more information.
SIL combines housing and supports for individuals who need daily support in order to live independently. With LME Care, our homes are usually a shared home arrangement where you would share with one or two others in a 1:2 or 1:3 support ratio. You can read more on SIL in a previous blog here.
Our team will provide assistance with daily living as well as community access supports. We assess your individual goals and tailored a plan thats just for you.

ILO is a type of funding that allows you to explore different ways to live – like with a host or a housemate. Then you can design your supports to help you live the way you choose.
There are lots of choices available with ILO, and it’s designed for you to live in a way that best suits you.
The biggest difference with ILO is it does not pay for a house, and it only focuses on your needs so it does not include support for activities outside your home.

STA (including respite) is support for when you need to live out of home for a short period of time (up to 14 days at a time). It can help your carers have a break or some time off to rest and recharge.
You can also use STA to experience living out of home for the first time, in a phased transition into more permanent housing.

Typically MTA provides an option to live while you’re waiting for a long term housing solution. Medium Term Accommodation gives you the flexibility to use your own support team in the home. Funding only covers the cost of the accommodation for the time you stay there.
You can access MTA funding for up to 90 days at a time.

SDA refers to a type of home or dwelling, and not to a type of support funding. It’s designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high needs. SDA homes are constructed to be more accessible and safer.
The SDA design standard is a detailed set of requirements for all new specialist disability accommodation that covers 4 categories:
In addition to the design standard, it must also comply with the Australian National Construction Code.

At LME Care, we have developed a new type of living option called Alternate Living Option (ALO). This enables you to make choices about where you live, who you live with and how you want to be supported.
Participants will generally receive a minimum of 6 hours of support each day as part of ALO, and this will be tailored for your own individual needs. It’s designed to give you a sense of home and belonging as well as building independence.
We provide a choice of furnished properties (where you just bring your bedroom furniture) or unfurnished properties.
To find out if ALO is a suitable option for you, please reach out to our team today.
As you can see the accommodation options available within NDIS can be complex to understand. If you require help, please reach out to our friendly team, or visit out website.
