Milly’s Place: New Swimming Program Launches With A Splash!

Almost 12 months ago Milly’s Place launched their NDIS Day Centre or Community Hub. It was developed as a place of learning, friendship, growth and most importantly – fun!

The program consists of different activities our participants can get involved in each day. Some of our participants choose to participate in all days, while others select the days they like. A full list of our programs can be found on our website here.

Wednesday’s were previously dedicated to Music & Movement. Here, our participants joined a variety of live music performances, dance and used an array of musical instruments to invoke the senses. While this program was a huge success, participants were also asking for an opportunity to do a swimming program.

Our team got together and managed to transform our Wednesday Music program into a Swimming Program.

About Our Swimming Program At Milly’s Place

When is it? Our brand new Swimming Program will take the place of the Music Program on Wednesdays.

This program has been so rewarding for staff as well as participants.

We have some participants who are in wheelchairs – this program gives them an opportunity to get out of their chairs and swim with so much freedom. Being able to feel the movement of their arms and legs in the water is a real treat.

Our group joins a swimming group for some structured lesson time, as well as playing with pool equipment such as noodles. We then spend time forming a circle and treading water. This not only helps develop the muscles, it also helps the interaction between the group. We have some participants who are shy or more reserved, and to see them calling out a persons name and being able to swim over is a really fun activity and fabulous exercise.

How Does Swimming Help Those With A Disability?

Swimming offers numerous benefits for people with disabilities, both physical and psychological. Here are some ways swimming can help individuals with disabilities:

  1. Physical Therapy: Swimming provides a low-impact form of exercise. The buoyancy of water reduces stress on the joints, making it easier for individuals with conditions such as arthritis, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injuries to move and exercise without causing further strain or injury.
  2. Improved Range of Motion: Swimming helps improve flexibility and range of motion in the joints, which is especially beneficial for individuals with mobility impairments or musculoskeletal conditions. The resistance of water allows for gentle stretching and strengthening of muscles without putting excessive stress on the body.
  3. Cardiovascular Health: Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular workout that helps improve heart and lung function
  4. Muscle Strength and Endurance: Swimming engages multiple muscle groups throughout the body, helping to build strength and endurance. Individuals with disabilities can improve their muscle tone, coordination, and overall physical fitness through regular swimming activities.
  5. Improved Balance and Coordination: Swimming requires coordination and balance, which can help individuals with disabilities improve their motor skills and proprioception (awareness of body position).
  6. Pain Management: Swimming can help alleviate pain associated with certain disabilities or chronic conditions. The buoyancy and gentle resistance of water can provide relief from joint pain, muscle stiffness, and other discomforts, allowing individuals to exercise more comfortably.
  7. Psychological Benefits: In addition to the physical benefits, swimming offers psychological benefits such as stress relief, relaxation, and improved mood.
  8. Social Interaction and Inclusion: Swimming programs provides opportunities for social interaction, friendship, and a sense of belonging. It allows individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences and interests, fostering a supportive and inclusive community.

We still have places available to join our swimming program. To get started, either complete an expression of interest via our website (link below), or give us a call on 07 3112 7883.
