Can you believe It’s already been 3 weeks since our Cooking Program has been up and running at our Community Hub – Milly’s Place! We wanted to share some of the background about this incredible program, as well as some pictures of the progress. In a nutshell we are so proud of how far our participants have come in such a short time.
When we set out to build an NDIS Disability Day Centre, we wanted to make sure we catered for real life skills, not only the fun stuff.
We have witnessed first hand how nutrition has helped many of our clients live a better life, reduce medication dependencies and lose weight. So we wanted to provide a place where participants could learn, have fun and feel better.
Sometimes with limited knowledge or skills in the kitchen, or adapting to working in a kitchen with limited mobility or to simply be safe in a kitchen meant participants weren’t experiencing the benefits of home cooking.
So, naturally, we developed our very own Cooking Program! And it was an instant success.
The cooking program started in October 2023, and has been growing every week! Our goal is to create delicious and nutritious meals that our participants can easily replicate at home.
Our clients start the day choosing what to make. Next, we compile a shopping list of all the ingredients needed, before heading out to the local Supermarket to buy the ingredients.
When we arrive back at Milly’s Place HQ, our facilitator goes through a quick kitchen safety briefing including how to use a fire blanket (should the need arise). We then all get our aprons and chef hats on and glove up ready to have a ‘tossing good time’!
Cooking is run every Monday at Milly’s Place. You can learn more about Milly’s Place on our website here.
What’s been on the menu so far? We’ve enjoyed asian themes like Chicken stir fry with hokkien noodles, Italian with Spaghetti Bolognese as well as Classic Aussie Dishes like Shepherds Pie.
Our participants have been learning valuable skills like knife safety, correct food prep procedures and cutting techniques. As well as other skills like table setting and flavour combinations that work with different styles of food.

We have been so inspired seeing our eager new chef’s in the kitchen that we are developing more and more fun and exciting culinary adventures.
What’s next on the menu? This Monday 30th October we have a client who was a ex pastry chef joining our program to tech us how make Halloween themed biscuits.
Our cooking group will also be making spooky pizzas and a special punch. (Punch recipe courtesy of another participant). Then, we’re all getting dressed up for Halloween on Tuesday.
We have space available in all of our programs including Cooking. To find out more, reach out to our friendly team on 07 3112 7883 or complete an expression of interest on our website link below and one of our team can get back to you.
